The Marine Tech Expo, Plymouth’s marine and maritime industry conference, takes place from 12th and 13th July 2021. Like the Mayflower Autonomous Ship we wrote about a couple of weeks ago this event was due to be part of the Mayflower 400 celebrations last year – but like many other events it did not happen.
This year’s event is being held entirely online and is free to attend! Pixalytics Managing Director, Dr Samantha Lavender, will be giving a presentation on Innovations in Marine Earth Observation Supporting Sustainable Marine as part of session titled Smarter Monitoring on the second day. The session starts at 1.45pm and has three presenters whose talks will be followed by a Q&A session.
The focus of the second day is sustainability within the marine world, with discussions covering methods of propulsion, energy sources and our impact on the ocean environment; whereas, day one is focused on the application of autonomy in marine science and the commercial world.
This is the third Marine Tech Expo in Plymouth, with the first was held in 2016 and the second in 2018. We’ve been involved in various ways with all of the Marine Tech Expo events, which are organised by Plymouth City Council with the support of key local industry partners.
This year’s Expo is also being aligned with the British Sail Grand Prix which is taking place in Plymouth on the 17th and 18th of July. Following events in Bermuda and Taranto, Italy, it will take place within the stunning Plymouth Sound natural harbour. Eight competing nations will race it out in identical fast foiling F50 catamarans, reaching speeds exceeding 60mph. The racing will take place, weather permitting, on both the Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
The Marine Tech Expo will bring together decision makers, innovators and enterprises involved in the latest advances in marine technology with a focus on autonomous applications and sustainable marine developments demonstrating the South Coast’s marine credentials.
Alongside the presentations and discussion sessions there is online exhibition showcasing the latest marine technology developments from companies across the South Coast of England, and there will be opportunities throughout the event to have discussions with these businesses. There will also be live-streamed in-sea demonstrations of autonomous vehicles taking place in Plymouth’s Smart Sound proving range, which is set to be the UK’s first 5G enabled marine autonomy testbed.
