It’s Marine Tech Expo week in Plymouth! Taking place at the University of Plymouth on Thursday 21st June, the Expo will showcase the maritime businesses, marine innovation and research from Plymouth and the wider area of the South Coast Marine Cluster – a geographical area covering Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
This is the second Plymouth Marine Tech Expo, the first was held in 2016, and this year has a focus on autonomous marine platforms and their applications; cyber security; utilisation of data; systems and sensors. The keynote speakers are:
- John Murray, Maritime UK Board Member & Chief Executive of Society of Maritime Industries
- Chris Langford, Lead Engineer, Thales UK
- Michael Jones, Founder and Chairman of The Maritime Alliance
There will also be three concurrent streams with a series of speakers, running in both the morning and the afternoon, covering:
- Marine Platforms
- Data, Cyber and Sensors
- Marine Applications
Dr Samantha Lavender from Pixalytics will be talking in the afternoon session of the Data, Cyber and Sensors stream, presenting on ‘Innovations in Marine Earth Observation Supporting the Blue Economy.’
The day will also feature plenary sessions, a discussion on the opportunities and challenges for the future marine workforce, and the evening has a boat trip around Plymouth’s best maritime asset, Plymouth Sound, which is one of the best natural harbours in the world – although, of course, we may be biased!
Throughout the day, there will be an exhibition demonstrating a variety of the maritime services, skills and expertise available. Pixalytics has a stand, and so please come up and say hello if you are around!
Following the Expo, on Friday, there is an Insight Day where Plymouth’s marine community will offer behind access to the various technology and science within the city, including research vessel tours, water demonstrations and visits to Oceansgate – UK’s first marine enterprise zone.
We’re also really excited about the Young People’s Marine Tech Expo taking place the day before the Expo, on Wednesday, 20th June. There are going to 100 – 150 children from local schools, coming to in to learn about all the fantastic marine industries in science, technology, engineering and manufacturing. We’re delighted to be running an activity on the day where we hope to give the children an insight into the world of Earth Observation (EO) and satellite remote sensing. We’ve got a Sentinel-2 image of Plymouth printed out onto a 2 m by 2 m sheet, and we’ll be setting them tasks to identify, and count, different parts of the coastal and the city as seen from Space.
We’re not the only EO activity either, as Plymouth Marine Laboratory is also running an activity focussed on ocean colour. This will be a great chance to show the potential of opportunities within our industry.
Plymouth is already planning to run a much bigger Marine Tech Expo in 2020 to coincide with the Mayflower 2020 celebrations which commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrim Fathers setting sail for America; and who became the first European settlers in America, in what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts.
We’ve got a busy few days ahead, but look forward to an exciting and successful week!
