The Space4Climate Agriculture Market Breakthrough Project Showcase, held in the offices of Geovation in London on the 26th January 2026, was the culmination of the stakeholder engagement processes we’ve undertaken over a year. The aim was to better understand the use of satellite services, particularly satellite imagery and its derived data products and services, within the ‘last mile’ of the agricultural supply chain, i.e., those advisors and suppliers who are involved in supplying and interpreting data or providing advice and/or services directly to farmers, alongside the farmers themselves.
The project, funded by Space4Climate, has involved Environment Systems, Ian Encke Consulting, and Remote Sensing Applications Consultants Ltd working as partners alongside Pixalytics.
Showcase
The showcase aimed to present the project’s draft findings and recommendations to a community of stakeholders for discussion, comments and feedback. It brought together agronomists, agricultural networks, sustainability & water consultants, academic institutions, plus data & remote sensing companies.
After an overview of the day ahead, Krupa Nanda Kumar, Climate Services Development Manager at Space4Climate, gave an introductory presentation on Space4Climate. We followed this by giving some definitions of specific terms that were used throughout the day:
- Satellite-enabled services – any service, partly or wholly, supplied via or through a satellite orbiting the Earth.
- Satellite-derived data – raw data, measurements, and imagery collected directly by sensors aboard satellites orbiting the Earth used as inputs into applications such as weather forecasting, news reports, Google Earth, and agriculture applications.
- Satellite-derived information – products and services where satellite-derived data have been processed and analysed, transforming them into actionable information that can be used for decision-making.
The project discussions and activities focused on three areas:
- Key themes & findings review – Attendees reviewed the key themes and findings gathered by the project. They discussed whether these were issues across the sector, in specific areas, or, and this was a typical response, that the impact was dependent on other factors.
- Prioritisation of recommendations – Taking each of the project recommendations, groups prioritised these into high, medium, and lower priority actions to give some clarity and focus on those that could make the most impact in the near term.
- Key short-term actions – Finally, looking at those recommendations that had been prioritised as high, groups identified the immediate short-term actions required to take forward these recommendations, alongside some of the longer-term actions required.
These discussions were interspersed with the following presentations from project team members:
- How satellite-derived arable land cover layers can be used in relation to sustainable farming measures by Tim Pearson from Remote Sensing Applications Consultants Ltd.
- Evidence and insight for resilient agriculture by Steve Keyworth from Environment Systems Ltd.
- Barrier Breaking Project Concepts: Ways to Achieve Quick Wins with Near-Term Impact by Ian Enke from Ian Enke Consulting.
The activities and presentations generated lively discussions, debates, and comments throughout the day, making the showcase incredibly valuable and beneficial for the project. All the feedback from the day is being collated and will be used to refine the findings, help shape the recommendations, and outline the key actions to be proposed by the project.
Summary
The showcase demonstrated the power of people coming together and working collaboratively, where thoughts, comments, and ideas spark off everyone and go in various directions, giving projects, such as ours, a fantastic wealth of information to collate and digest. All this work will culminate in a presentation of the final report to the Space4Climate Board next month, after which the report will be published.
